Why people piss me off

JT & TJ
I'm messing about on Goodreads, adding the books I've read this month, and after I finish my review of Rick Riordan's latest Heroes of Olympus book, The House of Hades, I started reading some of the other reviews, most of which are cute in the teenage girl squealing kind of way. And then I see this one:

Heard about some questionable aspects of the story line...so disappointed!! My daughter loves Riordan and now she can't finish the series! Tragic.

And I can only think that this person is talking about the fact that Nico confesses that WHEN HE WAS TEN YEARS OLD he got a crush on Percy. And it so confused and scared him that that was part of the reason he ran away from Camp Half-Blood. And he still might maybe - at the grand old age of thirteen - still have a bit of that crush. OH NOES! QUEER!!!!!

And seriously, if this is the reason that this person is pulling the books away from her daughter, then fuck her and her homophobic bullshit. God, that shit really pisses me off.

Oh god. I had thankfully missed that sort of bullshit when I read the book (omg I love his books!) and I'm with you - he's a child! He thought he had a crush! It could mean he's gay - and if so, so what - and it could mean his hero-worship got a little too strong for him.

If so, SO WHAT.

I hate people.

THIS!!!! I mean seriously, did this stupid cunt never have a crush on an older girl or a teacher? She *heard* some stuff and is apparently too lazy or too prejudice to actually read it for herself to see what it's all about.

But don't you know that if you never tell your kids that gay people are real, there's no chance they'll be gay! So, you have to keep all signs of gayness from them, and then they will definitely never be attracted of the same gender!

*headdesk forever*

(Incidentally, my parents subscribed to this school of thought, so I know how it goes.)

In some ways I'm very lucky. My oldest brother is nine years older than me and he married very young when I was only ten. His wife's brother Fred was gay. I mean GAY!GAY!GAY!GAY!GAY! He wasn't ashamed of it, the family didn't care, my folks, as far as I know, didn't care, and so I kinda grew up around a bunch of really flaming drag queens. So I was never in the 'hide the children's eyes' camp, even as a little kid.

Oh it's crazy the stuff you run into with reviews. Some people are very... inflexible (I was going to say 'prim' and it's that too... only it's more than simply that.)

Yeah, I don't know. It's just seems so stupid and annoying to me.

I have to admit there are some utterly batshit crazy reviewers on GR (to balance out the ones who actually READ the book and comment). I hadn't gotten to this part yet (eh, I figured I'd be just fine clicking the spoiler since I will eventually read this no matter what). I have seen people just running down the list of LGBT books and giving them 1 stars because they are gay. This doesn't surprise me. It DOES piss me off.

I mean, I could be wrong about what she was talking about, but there was absolutely nothing else that was different about this book than any other in the series, except this. So it had to be what she was moaning about. And it appears she never even tried to find out exactly what was involved in the 'questionable' aspects. Lazy bitch.

I believe you. I mean, it can't be the violence since they're all relatively the same with that. I'm sure you're right.

It reminds me of my childhood when people were running around condemning D&D as demonic without even looking at what it was.

Well, they still do that. Any kid with a mental problem who does violence the first thing they look for is if he plays video games. Because, you know, it's all the video game's fault.

I can't believe the idiocy and the narrow mindedness. As if being gay is a disease the her daughter must be vaccinated against.

Exactly. If her daughter is young enough she probably wouldn't get the reference anyway, and if she's older, then teaching children that having a crush on someone of the same gender is *not* evil or wrong is important. But of course these are the people that shame their gay children into lives of misery and despair.

I've been meaning to read these books. I really like the story behind them. I just hadn't because I'd kind of dismissed them as being too young for me but then I saw the first movie while I was stuck in a hotel and adored it so I need to actually read the books and grab the lot. :)

And also - despite what she's worried about - UGH for someone reviewing something they haven't even read based on 'something they heard'. REALLY?? She's obviously the wrong target audience for these considering the books message is ACCEPTANCE.

Don't base the books on that lousy movie. Seriously, that movie was a travesty. The books are terrific! I adore Percy, and I think he just gets better as the books go along. He's a hero, but he has his flaws.

Back from a long trip and just starting to catch up. I must admit, I sometimes weep for us as a species. Was just doing a whirlwind tour of Italy and saw all these amazing male nudes with the manly parts broken off because that was too offensive to be seen. Do you know someone came back and painted over all the naughty bits on Michealangelo's Sistine Chapel because it offended their tender sensibilites? People!

I think most of that happened during the Victorian era, didn't it? I certainly *hope* assholes aren't destroying great art today!
