The In-Between Time

So, the bacchanal known as Christmas is over, and the bacchanal known as New Year's Eve is on the horizon. I have no NYE plans other than staying home, having some snacks and maybe a glass or two of wine, and doing what I usually do - watch tv and play games on my computer/tablet. I actually prefer that. I don't have that much fun in social situations.

Had a nice Christmas. I went to my oldest brother's church for Christmas Eve services. He and his wife were joining their church, and the pastor suggested doing it on Christmas Eve since it was last Christmas Eve that they first started going to that church. Roy asked me if I'd come, and I was happy to. I was especially happy that there was no snow because they live about an hour away off the beaten track (though not as off as some of the places they've lived. LOL). The church they go it is a tiny little white country church. I don't think it could hold more than a hundred people. And it was packed with families. Roy & Marty were surprised and so happy when several of their kids (they have seven & two grandkids they raised!) and grandchildren showed up It was a bit chaotic because the little kids were a bit rambunctious (and not just ours, thank heavens! *g*), but Pastor Steve took it all in stride, and I really enjoyed the service and being with my family. Depending of the weather, I may go there next Christmas Eve too.

Went to my other brother's house for Christmas Day, and it was fun. But, OMG, they buy way too much stuff for their grandkids. And they spent way too much money on me, especially on gift cards. But that's how they are. Far too generous.

We have a cousin, the only living child of our dad's brother. She's alone except for her cousins, and she always comes to Don's house for the main holidays. She doesn't have very much money, at all, living on reduced social security. Last Thanksgiving I had brought my new Kindle Paperwhite with me and I was showing it to her, and she just loved it. So... I bought her one for Christmas. That, the charger, the case, and a gift card. She was so excited, it was wonderful to see. It's the first time I've really enjoyed giving someone a gift for a long time because it was really something that someone wanted who wouldn't be able to get it for herself. For me, that's the fun of gift giving.

And today, I have a touch of laryngitis. Thanks all the darned kids I was around! I'm glad I'm on vacation right now.

Isn't it fun to give a gift someone really enjoys? I think I like that better than getting stuff. Especially Don's mom's gifts. Unless I enthuse far more than my nature is comfortable with she's convinced I don't like it.

I love candlelight Christmas Eve services. What a wonderful time to join a church. All around sounds like a neat Christmas! :)

Oh, I really enjoyed as she opened each present in turn - first the charger (had no idea what the hell it was! LOL), then the cover, and her face started to light up when she realized what it was, and then the Paperwhite. Her face just beamed! It was so much fun! :-)

My sister-in-law almost started crying during the service where they were being taken into the church. It was really lovely.

How spectacular that you were able to provide such a well appreciated present to your cousin!

I hope that you recover quickly.

What a great story about your cousin.

Sending along healing vibes for that throat.

sounds like a really nice holiday. And that's a wonderful gift for your cousin

Thanks. I was showing her how to use it, and it's pretty hysterical. She's a total noob when it comes to electronic devices, and she acts like it'll shatter like spun sugar if she presses on the touch screen too hard. LOL

Android dragon touch

Ah, I 'm not aware of that one. I went ahead and bought my cousin a Kindle Fire - the cheapest one - and it's really nice. She doesn't have a computer so it was a cheap way to allow her to get on the internet, make it easier for her to shop for her books, play games, and watch movies, etc. She loves it too. She called me yesterday to say that after she got home from church, she watched a movie we bought for her that she loved and hadn't seen in years and then played a game until 3am! LOL

hahaha she's really enjoying it. Mine is better today. I think part of the issue is mom and dad's internet is having issues AND this has the WORST user manual ever
Jan. 2nd, 2014 07:39 pm (UTC)
Yeah, user manuals usually are. Thank god for Amazon customer service because they'll help you no matter how stupid your question. /real life experience. *g*

hahaha good point. Seriously this manual was a fold out thing of about 12 panels most of which was a screen shot.
